Sylvain Saudan
Sylvain Saudan is considered the first great extreme skier. The one that sparked the spark for many others to put their edges on impossible slopes. He was also the first to think that the new frontier of skiing was in the 8000m peaks in the Himalayas.

Couloir Whymper, Gervasutti gully, Marinelli on the east side of Rosa, the Eiger, Denali. And then the first 8000er, Gasherbrum I. No one had ever dreamed of skiing down it before: it's just a few lines from the CV of Sylvain Saudan, the skier of the impossible, as he was nicknamed at the time. And don't be fooled by the fact that those descents are today among the objectives of many good ski mountaineers. Think about when Saudan put them under the edges, starting in 1967, with the equipment of the time: 2.15 meter parallel-sided skis and, at least at the beginning, leather boots with laces. No example before him to take inspiration from. He was criticized for willingly using planes and helicopters to reach the summit. He didn't always do it and explains the reasons for those choices. The name of the Valais skier will forever remain in the golden book of extreme skiing, admired and imitated by his followers. In this story, written when he was still in full swing, Saudan reveals his certainties and indecisions, his beginnings and difficulties, his defeats and great victories. Three final interviews update the evolution of his career up to today: well into his eighties, from his chalet in Les Houches, not far from Chamonix, Sylvain Saudan continues to carry his skis on his shoulders.
