Trekking in Slovenia

Slovenia is known to hikers for the Julian Alps, but it actually has much more to offer. It is a state about half the size of Switzerland and although only about 11 percent of the Earth's surface is covered by high mountains, 90 percent is above 300 meters above sea level and Slovenians proudly declare themselves a Alpine nation. The Slovenian High Route runs from Maribor, near the Austrian border in north-eastern Slovenia, to Ankaran on the Adriatic coast in the south-west, and passes through 500km of exceptional mountains. The itinerary described in this guide is divided into 12 sections of 3-6 days each and the beginning and end of each section can be reached by public transport. The difficulty standards are varied, and while some sections are accessible to any trained walker, others require mountaineering experience.
