Oban, Mull and Kintyre, walks

A few miles north of Lochgilphead, overlooking the flat, marshy Moine Mhor, is the Great Moss, home to a prehistoric hillfort. This rock is considered the birthplace of Scotland, because it was here that the Scots established their headquarters. Dunadd became the capital of their kingdom. To the north is Oban with high, rugged hills, narrow valleys and long lochs. To the south the narrow Kintyre Peninsula extends to Campbeltown and the Mull of Kintyre, the latter within sight of the Antrim coast of Northern Ireland and at about the same latitude as Alnwick in Northumberland. To the east, across the long inlet of Loch Fyne, you reach the hills and forests of the Cowal Peninsula, bordered by Loch Long and the Firth of Clyde.
