Of all the national parks, the North York Moors is probably the one with the most clearly defined physical boundaries. On three sides it is made up of hills which dominate the surrounding plains in a semi-circular arc: to the north the Cleveland Hills overlooking the Cleveland Plain and the Tees valley, to the west the abrupt escarpment of the Hambleton Hills overlooks the valleys of York and Mowbray towards the distant Pennines and, to the south the hills overlook the Vale of Pickering.
