Year: 2001 Format: 13x23 Pages: 96 Photos: with 28 hiking itineraries of varying degrees of difficulty in the Lake District in Cumbria. The Lake District is one of the best-known English tourist locations and is famous for its lakes (among the deepest and longest in England), its mountains and its links with early 19th century poetry, particularly the writings of William Wordsworth and the so-called Lake Poets. The central part of the area, the most visited, is part of the Lake District National Park, which became a National Park in 1951. It is located entirely within the current county of Cumbria, which in the past was part of the historic counties of Cumberland, Westmorland and of Lancashire. Before the advent of tourism, isolation had been the main feature of the history of the Lake District, tucked away in the north-west corner of England, jutting into the Irish Sea and almost cut off from the rest of the country by of the long, wide inlets of Morecambe Bay to the south and the Solway Firth to the north, as well as its mountain barriers. To the west these mountains slope down towards the Cumbrian coast and to the east (landwards), the Lune and Eden valleys form a natural border. With cartographic tables, text in English.
