Year: 1993 Format: 13x23 Pages: 96 Photos: with 28 excursions to the extreme edge of the south-east English peninsula along the coasts and inland of Dover. The first visitors to Kent entered about 6,000 years ago across the land bridge that joined England to the continent. Kent is a maritime county and even after the land bridge disappeared it remained the easiest landing place for travelers from Europe. Julius Caesar landed at Deal and a century later Emperor Claudius arrived here to colonize Britain. In the late Middle Ages, when the invention of gunpowder transformed weapons of war, large oak trees were felled to make charcoal for smelting iron, which was used to make cannons for warships built on the Thames and Medway. Today Kent is known as the "garden of England" for its landscaping and also has some of the most beautiful and famous gardens in the United Kingdom, probably the most famous of which is Sissinghurst, created by Vita Sackville-West in the 1930s. With cartographic tables in the text, in English.
