Hampshire and New Forest, walks

The rich variety of Hampshire's landscape makes walking extremely rewarding, through gently contrasting countryside which, for the most part, is surprisingly unspoilt. The New Forest dates back to the 11th century, when the area was chosen as a royal reserve by William I of England and was called Foresta Nova, even if at the time the term did not designate a wooded area, but rather a hunting territory. Even today the woodland area is less than half of the entire New Forest; the rest of the territory is made up of pastures, heather and fern meadows, wetlands, inhabited areas and coasts.
