The Chilterns are part of the long line of limestone hills that extends intermittently across southern and eastern England, roughly north-eastwards northwards from Wiltshire to the Yorkshire coast. They are the highest part of that range, stretching from the Thames valley through Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, before the flat countryside around Luton.
