The guide takes into consideration 95 routes chosen in Valsassina, Val Imagna, Val Brembana, Val Seriana, Val di Scalve, Bassa Val Camonica. The Orobie have always been skied, practically since the introduction of skis in Italy. Even before tourist attendance, the inhabitants of the Bergamo valleys traveled them on cross-country skis. The original ski mountaineering in these areas, but also up until the seventies and even eighties, was on narrow skis. The reasons for the approach are historical even before being orographic, and date back to a combination of factors: very strong contribution of personnel to the Alpine troops, with related training in skiing as a means of transport; the appeal of military corps sports centers as a profession; poor suitability of the terrain for the development of alpine skiing; scarcity of economic resources on site caused by the emigration of the workforce towards the industrial economy of the plain – Milan is nearby.
