After Umbria, the birthplace of Francis of Assisi, there is no other region of Italy that was visited by the saint as much as the Marche, where he went on several occasions between 1208 and 1219. This is why the idea was born of this book: a 9-stage guide to the Franciscan routes in the Marche and Montefeltro, a land to be rediscovered, not only for its strong links with the figure of the saint, but also for the beauty of its landscapes and the medieval towns that dot it. The itinerary is structured starting from historical information relating to the travels and preaching of the Poverello narrated in the most ancient texts of Franciscanism, which allow us to trace the exact places visited by Francis. To the locations mentioned in the sources are added some of the most evocative convents and sacred buildings that were built by his disciples a few years after his passing, or which are linked in other ways to his figure. Finally, there are also some sites not directly linked to the presence of Francis or which are linked to traditions not confirmed by sources, but which are certainly worth a visit. From Ascoli Piceno to Villa Verucchio (formerly in the province of Rimini), a journey in the footsteps of the Poverello among ancient monasteries, museums and charming villages, at the roots of Franciscan spirituality.
