This publication on military roads serving permanent fortification in Alto Adige provides a valuable contribution to the knowledge of that part of our past marked by important interventions in border areas and the creation of new access routes to a potential military front. If today we can make peaceful use of these works with a military past we owe it to history. We must be grateful for the precious gift of peace, knowing that it is not a given as long as war continues to be a real option.
