Eremi e romitori di Maremma

The harsh volcanic region of tuff, in the Maremma hinterland, saw different types of religiosity alternate over the millennia: proto-historic, Etruscan, Roman, Lombard, Christian; until the singular spread of numerous communities of hermits, in medieval times, in search of the "sacred" in the most remote and wild recesses of the territory. The extreme life of those hermits, relegated to woods and forests on the margins of society, has left traces in places of exceptional interest - the rock hermitages - presented here for the first time in a historical, photographic and documentary overview.
