Year: 2003 Format: 17x24 Pages: 96 Photos: col The volume offers an updated summary of current knowledge on the underground heritage of Calabria. The discussion takes place through the pages of four subsequent essays written by different authors, all accompanied by an extensive thematic bibliography. The first, of a historical nature, reconstructs with diachronic criteria the multiple testimonies on the caves of the region (starting from the 16th century) and traces the history of speleological research, from the first pioneering investigations, dating back to the 1930s, up to the most recent ones conducted by various speleological associations; the second essay analyzes with geographical criteria the cavities located in the province of Cosenza, the territorial area richest in underground phenomena; the third considers the underground emergencies in the provincial territories of Crotone and Catanzaro; the fourth, finally, examines the karst outcrops and natural cavities of an area that until some time ago was completely unknown from a speleological point of view, that of the provinces of Vibo Valentia and Reggio Calabria. The volume is also completed by a useful appendix which contains the overall list of caves in the region based on the data provided by the Calabria Cave Registry.
