The guide to the Ligurian Alps is dedicated to the mountain groups of Mongióie and Marguaréis, located at the extreme south-western edge of the Alpine chain and overlooking the Ligurian Sea which, on clear days, peeks out on the horizon. These are mainly limestone mountains, characterized by spectacular karst landscapes and large and extremely panoramic grassy ridges, which at the beginning of summer offer magnificent blooms. Thanks to their not too high altitudes, the Ligurian Alps have been frequented by man since prehistoric times, and even today on these mountains one can find countless traces left by the ancient activities of the mountain dwellers: mule tracks and paths that date back to remote times, sacred pylons, small churches, villages and stone farmhouses scattered across the bottom and sides of the valleys. In addition to the paths followed by shepherds, traces and memories of remote salt and oil routes are preserved in the Ligurian Alps, the memory of which still remains in some toponyms, including "Passo delle Saline" and "Pian dell'Olio". They are beautiful mountains even in autumn: with the yellow of the larches and beeches, the red of the cherry trees, with the suspended, almost enchanted atmosphere that precedes winter, with the clear air that reveals views unthinkable on most days summer, with the still warm light of the nearby Mediterranean. 118 hiking itineraries, which wind along the Italian and French sides of the chain, in the valleys: Tanaro, Casotto, Corsaglia, Maudagna, Éllero, Pésio, Colla, Vermenagna and Roya.
