Hard to believe, but it is possible to escape “into the wild” without leaving old Europe. Just head for Iceland, a land only a few hours' flight away from the chaos of our cities, but still wild, an extreme and depopulated place where nature is mother and stepmother, creator and destroyer. The perimeter of the island offers a succession of enchanting and unforgettable views: the majestic glaciers, the countless waterfalls, the black, long and deserted beaches that alternate with narrow and deep fjords dotted with tiny villages, the endless lava fields eye where you walk between black rocks from which steam escapes incessantly, the desolate and wild lands and the irregularity of the remote western fjords with the most numerous seabird colonies in the world, the informal atmosphere of Reykjavík. But the biggest surprise is perhaps represented by the hinterland, a harsh and inhospitable but equally fascinating plateau, which is home to active ice caps and craters, thermal springs and geysers, expanses covered by green tundra, soft moss and sterile lava deserts. Iceland is the extreme wilderness of Europe: a cold land with a heart of fire, which will truly manage to warm the heart, excite and seduce even the traveler passionate about nature who has already seen everything and is no longer easily amazed.
