“What I wrote – comments Pugolotti – is the story of challenges, fears, falls and rises through the races I faced in the deserts and hostile places of the planet. There is my story, with events that happened and connected to each other in a natural way. Inside these stories there is my whole world. Simple and direct as I have lived all these stray years. I love everything about deserts. All. Sometimes naively, because I end up hiding the dangers to chase a dream that began in 2005 and is still here, alive and beautiful like the sun at dawn in an indefinite point of nowhere. Story of Mauritania, of Assekrem in Algeria, of Libya. Of the Sahara and the Gobi. But also from Karakhum and Kizilkum. Of the crazy challenge from the Dead Sea to the Red Sea, born from a dream, from an idea that seemed thrown there like that, and ended up in my story, in my running story. 468 meters below sea level, at the lowest point on earth. And then Afghanistan, not a desert but a place that left its mark on me, scared and surprised me. I still remember that day and the note I wrote to myself on a torn sheet of paper. I'm here alone. Today there is only the wind and fear keeping me company. I'm waiting to cross the border into Afghanistan. I crossed myself three times. Even today there is a need for everything, even that which cannot be seen and which you hope is there to watch over and protect you. And then other stories, encounters, solitude and passion beyond the logical and unthinkable to take me where my mind wanted to push me. My life on the run, my life away from here, away from everyday life. And this is precisely how I learned that real life is not the one I live every day, as expected, but in the last hole in the world, where no one has ever pushed me and where no one has looked for me. In the Mauritanian desert, for example, I am not Giuliano Pugolotti, resident in Barbiano in the province of Parma. I am simply an ultrarunner from the deserts, without an age, without a name and surname. Without a reason".
