«A great mountaineer in his own right, Motti has very lively and restless cultural interests, which allow him to place mountaineering within the history and civilization of different countries, relating it to the development of ideas and customs, with social and political facts, in short, seeing it as the cultural, and not just sporting, phenomenon that it is. This allowed him to produce a work that has no equal in Italian; but is there anything abroad that can be compared to this story in terms of breadth of information and passionate liveliness of participation supported by personal experience?". Thus wrote the Turin critic and historian Massimo Mila on 29 September 1978, reviewing the History of Alpinism for «La Stampa». Today the great work is finally offered in an independent edition, with the complete update, from 1977 to 2013, edited by Enrico Camanni.
