Mangart

Year: 2012 Pages: 354 Last days of 2005. In the mountains on the border between Friuli and Slovenia, a polar cold paralyzes the activities of the valleys and smears the walls of the most important peaks with verglas. Among these, Mangart stands out, eight hundred vertical meters with few holds, on whose north face a solitary mountaineer, Flavio Ferrari, is trying to climb a new route, between the rock and the ice that clogs up the cracks. He gains one hundred meters a day and sleeps in a Goretex bed suspended over the void, where he cooks freeze-dried soups by heating the snow. At home, Flavio left no one and in Friuli no one knows about him. In the car that took him there from Milan, he left neither tickets nor clues as to where, if any, to go and look for him. It's his way of going to the mountains, rigidly ethical and above all autistic. Same as him. But this time the loneliness doesn't last. Without knowing it and without wanting to, he finds himself close to the point where a showdown linked to old events, to the massacres of the Bosnian war, takes place. He ends up right in the middle of it and when he has the chance to abandon everything he decides to go through with it, because he understands that that story is also his story.
