West of the Cisa Pass, small teeth of magmatic rock or tormented conglomerate emerge with difficulty from almost impenetrable broad-leaved forests. Along the Tuscan-Emilian ridge the grassy peaks follow one another like a long thread, interrupted by sandstone ridges, with to the north the valleys sliding towards the agricultural landscapes of the first Emilian undulations while to the south they fall towards the placid Lunigiana basin. Finally, in front of the gentle reliefs of the Apennines, the sharp silhouettes of the Apuan Alps appear, like sudden apparitions, islands of marble between Garfagnana and Versilia. Traditionally, all these mountains have never been a privileged "play" ground for ferrata enthusiasts but in truth, often almost hidden, equipped paths are also hidden between these peaks and in these valleys, almost always in solitary places, other times instead just a short distance away. from towns and historic villages. This book aims for the first time to bring together all these itineraries, of different characteristics and difficulties, giving visitors to the Apennines and the Apuan Alps a small but exhaustive catalog of routes to discover these mountains so different from each other but equally complementary, which they “look” at close range.
