After describing the environment of the Apuan Alps, with the life of the villages and their peculiarities in the foreground, a feeling of incompleteness enveloped us; then the idea of a fifth volume was born that would take into consideration other aspects of the Apuan territory. Not having complete and in-depth knowledge of the territory in all its most varied and complex aspects, we turned to those who have long acquired this expertise - each in their own sector - to help us complete the great fresco of the Apuan Alps. We asked them for a sacrifice: to condense into a few pages thoughts that would require much more breathing space; a commitment that was not easy to achieve, but which they willingly accepted. And it is precisely thanks to the enthusiasm shown in participating in this project that we were able to carry out a further stage of our journey: a complete excursion between sky and sea, under the clouds astride a heron, to talk about these mountains and how its rocks were formed, to tell the extraordinary historical-landscape beauties of an environment that hosted ancient peoples and immortalized artists who drew legendary figures from marble: to reveal the secrets of the majesties, popular traditions and gastronomy , but also the rock signs left by remote civilisations; to talk about the industriousness and ingenuity of ancient populations who, through agriculture, pastoralism and craftsmanship, led a dignified life despite poverty. Finally, to remember the tragedies experienced in these mountains during the Second World War, which once again show us man in his greatness and misery.
