Peaks, good trails and some of the best mountain huts in the Alps make the Zillertal in the Austrian Tyrol an ideal destination for experienced hikers and mountaineers. This guide describes two very popular treks, both of which can be done in eight to ten days, with the option of adding day trips from huts to climb peaks on both sides of the border, including the Grand Pillar, the highest in the Zillertal. The Zillertal Rucksack Route, or Berliner Hoehen Weg, links eight huts without crossing glaciers or difficult passes, with ample opportunity to climb nearby peaks. You start above Mayrhofen and follow a circular route that ends above the charming village of Ginzling. The duration of this tour is 70-80 km, depending on the departure and arrival location chosen, with a difference in altitude of 6700 metres. The Zillertal South Tyrol Tour crosses the entire range along the Austrian-Italian border, starting from Turistenraste with a spur to reach the Zillertal Rucksack Route and make a circular tour. It is a trek practically known only by locals, which helps make it an interesting and unusual route choice. Overall, you cover 55 km with a difference in altitude of just over 5000 metres. This is a physically demanding trek, an excellent challenge for more experienced hikers looking to undertake a remote and challenging tour.
