Armando Aste was one of the greatest mountaineers of the post-war period. Born in Isera, in the province of Trento, in 1926, he participated as a protagonist in the revolution in the world of vertical mountaineering in the 1950s and 1960s. A golden period in which mountaineers like Bonatti in the Western Alps, René Desmaison in the French Alps and Hermann Buhl in the Austrian Alps conquered the great walls with new imagination; for the Dolomites there was Armando Aste. Equipped with unparalleled strength and intuition, Armando has got his hands on the biggest walls in the Dolomites, so much so that naming them all would lead to a cold list. Suffice it to mention the large walls such as Cima d'Ambiez, Cima di Pratofiorito, Crozzon di Brenta, Civetta and Marmolada. His mountaineering led him to link up with the best interpreters of the moment such as Franco Solina, Fausto Susatti and Marino Stenico, but Aste is also among the greatest solo mountaineers. His solo climbs include Campanile Basso, Cima d'Ambiez, Torre Venezia, Roda di Vael and Cima Ovest d Lavaredo. Finally, he was the first Italian climber of the north face of the Eiger in 1962 and the first climber of the South Tower of Paine.
