Pizzo Badile

A route conceived and opened by Riccardo Cassin and which had Hermann Buhl as its first solo climber can be nothing other than a milestone in the history of mountaineering: especially if it develops along one of the great North faces of the Alps, such as the North- East of Pizzo Badile. Hansiörg Auer, retraces Buhl's legendary adventure: cycling from Innsbruck across the Maloja Pass to Val Bondasca, over 200 kilometres, to climb the Via Cassin, opened in 1937 with a great and tragic climb. In that 1952 Buhl repeated it alone, in just over 4 hours, and then returned to Innsbruck, still on his bicycle, pedaling all night, so as to be able to show up for work on time.
