The problem of health protection has always had a subjective response - starting from those who are ill - and an objective response - starting from the institutions responsible for governing society. Furthermore, the situation of illness or psychophysical well-being has objective causes, being also determined by living conditions and corporate organisation. The four essays presented in this volume take all of this into account, even if in a way that is by no means exhaustive, but, on the contrary, open to any possible contribution, with the characteristic of focusing on a specific geographical-territorial area. On the one hand, society, understood as a population as a whole, identifies its own ailments, the state of illness. And it first seeks the answer within itself, in the social fabric, in tradition, even of a magical-religious nature, before going outside of itself and accepting the official offer. On the other hand, society, understood as those responsible (specifically the nascent Italian State and the Waldensian Church), offers health: allopathic medicine, following the research carried out in the Universities, but also, in particular with regard to confessional healthcare structures , more motivated by inclusion in the local social fabric, health education and analysis of the genesis of the disease.
