In 1975 it seemed madness: climbing an eight-thousander in two without oxygen and in Alpine style. In «Life according to me» Messner mentions the feat on which he built his fame and his philosophy of life: Gasherbrum I, climbed together with his climbing partner Peter Habeler. But he now dedicates an entire book to the detailed and extraordinarily compelling account of this undertaking, initially mocked and even opposed by the entire mountaineering community: "Two and one eight thousand". A book in which he talks not only about Gasherbrum I but also about the crossing of the two Gasherbrums accomplished with Hans Kammerlander in 1984 - always without porters and without oxygen - when the two "sacred monsters" of contemporary mountaineering were two pioneers who knew how to dare and see distant.
