The book is the story of the amazing life of Julius Payer, of Bohemian origin, who was on the one hand one of the greatest mountaineers of the second half of the nineteenth century - with dozens of first ascents in the Ortles-Cevedale and Adamello-Presanella groups - and also pursued polar explorer. In fact, once his mountaineering experience was over, he embarked on an amazing career as a polar explorer, with expeditions to Greenland (1869-70), Novaya Zemlja (1871) and Franz Josef Land (1872-74). Payer really had five lives: soldier, mountaineer, polar explorer, writer and finally painter. This book, with the help of original sources, investigates Payer's life and his extraordinary exploits for the first time.
